When should one visit an ophthalmologist?

Children under the age of 8 should have their eyes examined by an ophthalmologist. If you had ocular diseases, suspect having an eye disease or you had eyes surgery before, then make an appointment to assess your eyes' health with an ophthalmologist to be sure.

It is advisable to visit an ophthalmologist at the age of 40 at the latest and then regularly about once in 3 years to avoid unpleasant surprises. For instance, the risk of having a glaucoma increases after the age of 45. This disease often progresses without any symptoms at the early stage, but can later damage the fundus of the eye and cause blindness. Glaucoma can be hereditary.

Cataract, on the contrary, is an age-related disease. The eye lens  becomes more rigid with time and its light permeability dicreases. The solution to the problem is a routine operation when an artificial lens is implanted into the eye.

Diabetes adds to the risk of eye damage irrelevant of age. If you have a diabetes of the 1st or 2nd stage you have to examine your eyes regularly, as in the worst of cases it can cause blindness.

Our expert optometrists will gladly advise you on eye health issues. If necessary, they will also consult an ophthalmologist or send you to further medical tests.
